Because this hike was the closest one to our house in Engelberg, we did the walk to Fluhmatt several times, and often as the beginning or ending portion of another hike.
For that reason I almost did not do a blog post about it as its own walk.
But then I decided to go ahead, because I wanted to remember it as its own walk.
It was a walk we could do right after dinner.
Or sometimes Taido and I would make the trek up to Fluhmatt by ourselves early in the morning.
We saw the view of Engelberg from Fluhmatt at many different times of day and in varying degrees of cloudiness.
And I think that this is one of the joys of traveling to one place and staying for a long period of time, or of visiting the same destination over and over again:
You get to know it a different way. I feel like I have almost made friends with a trail once I begin to anticipate its curves and steep places. There is something rather comforting in the familiarity of repeated experience.
And so I’m glad I gave it its own walk, this simple walk to Fluhmatt. In fact, even though the walk from our house to the village of Engelberg was only about ten minutes long, I am going to give it its own blog post too. Look for that tomorrow.

Hi Alison! I totally loved reading about your walks in Switzerland and looking at your pictures. When I was a kid, my dad was stationed in Germany and we would take trips to different countries in Europe ever summer. One year, we went to Switzerland and I’ve never forgotten it. I was about 8 years old then. Now, I’m 50 but I’ve never forgotten it. Your kids will treasure the memory forever! But how did you do it? Was it some sort of house swap thing? Can I do it? I live in Las Vegas, Nevada in a nice home and would love to swap houses for a couple of weeks with somebody in Engleberg.
