Thank you for your reflections on Lent. I have never been successful in giving things up for Lent.

It occurred to me a couple of years ago that Lent is not about giving things up at all. Rather it is, as you alluded to, about preparation. When Jesus did not eat for 40 days, he didn't do it to prove that he could, or to make a sacrifice to the Father. He did it to prepare himself for what was coming next.

Tonight we'll make pancakes as is the Irish Lenten eve tradition and I will think about whether or not I am willing to go without something important in order to prepare me for whatever God may be calling me to. I don't know if I can do it.
