Homemade Pizza

We make homemade pizza at our house almost every week.  It’s a meal that can be adjusted to feed a crowd, can be tweaked to serve picky kiddos and it uses up leftover ingredients out of my fridge.  What’s not to love about that?

As long as I have flour and yeast, I can usually come up with a way to serve pizza, no matter what other ingredients I have on hand.

We use all different kinds of cheese and any vegetables we have.  The kids love a little turkey pepperoni, but if I have prosciutto, I use that.

A few favorite combinations:

mushroom, kalamata olive, roasted garlic and mozzarella

arugula, lemon juice, caramelized onions and parmesan

fresh basil, sliced tomatoes and fresh mozzarella

italian sausage, green peppers, sliced yellow squash and feta cheese

spinach, asparagus and goat cheese

It’s also fun to make lots of little pizzas and have lots of ingredients to choose from so that everyone can make their own.

For this pizza party night, I got out all my fun Ziploc glass containers and made a buffet of ingredients.

I labeled the kinds of pizza on the sheets of parchment before baking.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell which kinds are which once you cover them with cheese.

I usually make three sheet pan pizzas for our family, which is a double recipe of this dough.  I make one plain cheese pizza and then I experiment with the other two.

Homemade Pizza Dough

1 cup warm water

1 package or 1 scant tablespoon of yeast

1 teaspoon of honey

1/2 teaspoon of salt

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (or 3 cups white flour)

Sprinkle yeast over warm water.  Add honey and let proof. (dissolve, bubble up)

Add salt.  Mix in a cup of the flour, then add the rest and knead until dough comes together in a ball.

Oil a bowl and let rise to double. (30 minutes to an hour)

Roll dough flat onto parchment lined pans.

Cover with sauce, ingredients and cheese.

Bake at 400 degrees F for 15 to 20 minutes.

Enjoy!

Special thank you to my friend Sarabeth Jones at The Dramatic for taking all these lovely pizza photos for me!

  1. We love to make homemade pizzas too. The kids have a great time helping and picking out ingredients for “their” pizzas. This week my oldest wants to experiment with homemade alfredo sauce topped with chicken and broccoli.
