<p><strong><em>Y&#8217;all!</em> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Last Saturday I got to do the <a href="http://www.colormerad.com/">Color Me Rad 5K</a> in Little Rock and it was SO MUCH FUN!</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114923.jpg" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone wp-image-12089" alt="Color Me Rad, Color Run, 5K, Walking Not Running, FUN" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114923.jpg" width="559" height="559" /></a></p>
<p>I have never done a 5K before. Or any kind of K. In fact, if you have one of those stickers on the back of your car listing how many miles you ran in a marathon or a half marathon or a tri-something, well, hats off to you, but I have probably sneered at it.</p>
<p>Just a tiny little, silent sneer.</p>
<p>Because I seriously hate any kind of exercise that involves things bouncing or jiggling.</p>
<p>If it is not strolling around the lake or yoga, I can not be talked into doing it. If it involves special clothing or a trip to a store with the word &#8220;sports&#8221; in it, count me out. I will hike to the moon and back to see a pretty lake, but run on a treadmill? No way.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114941.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-12091" title="Kyran and Me" alt="Color Me Rad, Color Run, 5K, Walking Not Running, FUN, dreadlocks, colored dreadlocks, dreadlocks in a color me rad run" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114941.jpg" width="559" height="559" /></a></p>
<p>So when my friend, <a href="http://www.plantingdandelions.com/">Kyran</a>, asked me if I wanted to participate with a group of bloggers in the <a href="http://www.colormerad.com/">Color Me Rad 5K</a>, I was hesitant until I clarified that a) It was going to be more of a party than a race and b) I could walk instead of run.</p>
<p>Then I talked my daughter into doing it with me and signed us both up.</p>
<p>In the flurry of emails that went around from our team, I was relieved that lots of gals seemed to be choosing a lower key walking option, and I completely ignored the emails where people used words like &#8220;training&#8221; and &#8220;running.&#8221;</p>
<p>In fact, instead of getting together to train, we gathered for drinks a few nights before the &#8220;race.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Friends, this is how all exercise should be done.</strong> I think more people would go in for exercising if the picture was a little less sweat and bounce at the gym and a little more wine glasses and girl talk around a fire pit.</p>
<p>When race day arrived, I wondered if there would be a big crowd of folks with timing gadgets and protein gels, jogging in place in a claustrophobia-inducing jumble at the start line, but this was totally not the case.</p>
<p>Since I&#8217;ve never done a 5K before, I can&#8217;t really compare it to other runs, but the vibe at Color Me Rad is a little like the deck of a cruise ship. I couldn&#8217;t find the fruity drinks, but I&#8217;m sure they were hiding underneath the Red Bull table somewhere.</p>
<p>At the front there was some Zumba happening, along with lots of fun music, some party games and a few early color bombs to get you excited about turning your white clothes into a rainbow.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114811.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-12080" alt="Color Me Rad, Color Run, 5K, Walking Not Running, FUN" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114811.jpg" width="559" height="559" /></a></p>
<p>In retrospect, it&#8217;s funny how we were all rushing for a few little drops of color at the beginning. At the first few color stations, I would go through slowly because I was afraid I wasn&#8217;t quite getting enough. I wanted to be TECHNICOLORED! Silly me! At the end, you go through many puffy clouds of color and even get a few color pouches handed to you to throw on each other after you finish!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114818.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-12081" alt="Color Me Rad, Color Run, dreadlocks, 5K, Walking Not Running, FUN" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114818.jpg" width="559" height="745" /></a></p>
<p><strong>SO MUCH COLOR!</strong></p>
<p><strong>AND SO MUCH FUN!</strong></p>
<p>Seriously, I don&#8217;t think I could ever bring myself to do a 5K now where someone wasn&#8217;t throwing something at me. I mean really, it would be so boring.</p>
<p>Now I totally want to get in on the other side and be a color THROWER! Right? I think that would be just as fun!</p>
<h4><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114931.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-12090" alt="Color Me Rad, Color Run, 5K, Walking Not Running, FUN" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114931.jpg" width="559" height="421" /></a></h4>
<p>Have you ever done a Color Run? Did you LOVE it!?</p>
<h6><em>Disclosure: I totally got to walk this 5K for freebies because I am a blogger, but I didn&#8217;t even have to promise to show up. However, I am glad I did, because it was SUPER FUN! </em></h6>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114906.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-12087" alt="Color Me Rad, Color Run, 5K, Walking Not Running, FUN" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130619-114906.jpg" width="559" height="745" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span id="more-12093"></span></p>

<p><strong>Facing Fear</strong></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/tag/chalkboard/">chalkboard art</a> in my room is currently inspired by a quote I heard from <a href="http://catalystconference.com/podcast/dr.-brene-brown-episode-225/">an interview with Brene Brown</a>,</p>
<p>(h/t <a href="https://twitter.com/donnakhall">Donna Hall</a> for introducing me to Brene Brown, showing me the Podcast app on my phone and changing my life forever in the midst of a late night painting frenzy!)</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the quote:</p>
<h2 style="padding-left: 120px;"><strong>It&#8217;s possible to be afraid and brave in the very same moment.</strong></h2>
<p>She goes on to say that she finds herself in a state of being both afraid and brave all the time, and it is the willingness to be brave while we are afraid that is the essence of our power.</p>
<p><strong>Being Brave and Afraid</strong></p>
<p>A few summers ago I wrote <a title="the times they are a changin’" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2009/06/25/the-times-they-are-a-changin/">a post</a> about how my kids weren&#8217;t little anymore about how it was breaking my heart to endure so many changes.</p>
<p>Now I look at the girl who wrote those words four years ago, and I wish I could tell her to quit whining. I want to say to her,</p>
<p><em> You only think you know about change. I&#8217;ll show you change.</em></p>
<p><em>How about you empty your entire house of every piece of everything you&#8217;ve ever owned, quit your whole life here in Arkansas and fly to a new country with your husband and four kids with only what you can fit into a handful of suitcases?</em></p>
<p><em>How about you start all over in a new place where you are jobless, homeless and friendless?<br />
</em></p>
<p><em>How&#8217;s that for change?</em></p>
<p>The most common question I am asked right now about our <a href="http://www.taidochino.com/2013/05/31/chinos-to-scotland/">upcoming move to Scotland </a>goes something like this,</p>
<p><em>How are you feeling about everything?</em></p>
<p><strong>Some days, I am about to bust with excitement.</strong> Challenge! Travel! Adventure! People with cool accents!</p>
<p><strong>Other days, I am paralyzed by fear.</strong> How are we going to live? What will we eat? Are we destroying our lives? Will our kids hate us forever? Where will I buy black beans and steel cut oats in bulk?</p>
<p><strong>Most days, I can only put one foot in front of the other.</strong> Today I will paint one room in our house. Tomorrow I will call about having the carpets cleaned. I will clean out one more shelf. One more cabinet. I will box up just this one section of our life and close the door on it for a season.</p>
<p>One thing I can say for certain is that I am afraid.  I have almost no answers to my questions.  I have even fewer answers for my family&#8217;s questions.</p>
<p>So I love the idea of being brave in the midst of all the fear.  I think I&#8217;ve been calling it foolishness.  Or blind faith.</p>
<p>But now I am going to say in my heart that we are brave.</p>
<p><strong>I am brave.</strong></p>
<p><strong>And afraid.</strong></p>
<p><strong>At the same time.</strong></p>
<p><em>How about you?  Is there a place where you are afraid and brave at the same time?  Do you find that the two often coexist? </em></p>
<p>&nbsp; </p>

<p><strong>At this point in the summer, if someone asks, <em>Can we go to the pool?</em></strong></p>
<p><strong>I think, <em>Why not?</em></strong></p>
<p>And since we may not see another spicy hot Arkansas summer for some time, it seems like we should soak every minute we can, right?</p>
<p>I thought about trying to write a great post about summer, but I&#8217;ve read three AMAZING articles about summer this week while catching up on my <a title="Spring Clean Your Reader" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/05/17/spring-clean-your-reader/">blog reading</a>, so instead I&#8217;m just going to share them.</p>
<p>That way, I can spend more time at the POOL, yo!</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px">I LOVED Jen Hatmaker&#8217;s advice this week for <strong><a href="http://jenhatmaker.com/blog/2013/06/13/surviving-summer">Surviving Summer</a></strong>! So true and so funny, I actually read this entire post out loud to my mother.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px">Equally great were author Kyran Pittman&#8217;s plans for a DIY summer camp: <a href="http://www.plantingdandelions.com/welcome-to-camp-whattawedo/"><strong>Camp Whattawedo</strong>.</a></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px">And because adults want to have fun too!  Sarah Von Bargen of <a href="http://www.yesandyes.org"><em>Yes and Yes</em></a>, a new favorite blog this year, suggests <a href="http://www.yesandyes.org/2013/06/awesome-things-to-do-this-summer30.html"><strong>25 Thrilling, Memory-Making, Shockingly Awesome Things To Do This Summer</strong></a>. <p>Oh, and remember that time I went to <a title="Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith&#8217;s place.  No big surprise that my pal <a href="http://www.thedramatic.com">Sarabeth</a> and I came up with the same way to describe soy products!  Great minds think alike, right?</p>
<p>We&#8217;re celebrating <a title="the babies are one" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2007/06/20/the-babies-are-one/">a certain 7 year old</a> this weekend, so lots of fun times planned.</p>
<p>And, dear goodness, the 100 degree temperatures have arrived JUST IN TIME for my <strong>VERY FIRST 5K EVER</strong>!! Mary Polly and I will be <del>running</del> walking the <a href="http://www.colormerad.com/race.i?raceid=120"><strong>Color Me Rad 5K</strong></a> this Saturday.  I am praying we won&#8217;t fall down dead in the heat.</p>
<p>Whatever you do this weekend, I hope you enjoy the sunshine and <strong>LOVE</strong> with all your heart.</p>
<p>Oh, and show a great DAD  some BIG love this weekend! (Because parenting is hard, y&#8217;all!)</p>

<p><strong>Visiting The Campanile in Venice, Italy</strong></p>
<p>When you&#8217;re walking in <a title="Venice, Italy" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/03/11/venice/">dream-like Venice</a>, there is not a single moment in which you do not want to snap a photo.  Every doorway and window.  Each little bridge or canal.</p>
<p>Venice is breathtaking at every turn.</p>
<p>You have to force yourself out from behind your camera to take it in a little deeper.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t think you can mess up a trip to this city.  <strong>All you need to do to be struck by its beauty is to show up.</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084049.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11940" alt="The Campanile in Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy, Best View in Venice" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084049.jpg" width="559" height="745" /></a></p>
<p>That being said, on <a title="Venice, Italy" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2012/09/30/venice-italy/">my first magical visit to Venice</a>, I did not ascend the bell tower in St. Mark&#8217;s square, <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Mark%27s_Campanile"><em>The Campanile</em></a></strong>, from which, I believe, you can see the <strong>Best View In Venice</strong>.</p>
<p>On my second visit with my sweet daughter, Mary Polly, we arrived at the tower by boat early in the morning.  (The <em>next</em> best view of Venice might have to be from the front of a boat.)</p>
<p>The tower opened at 9am, at which time there was no line to ride the elevator to the top and take in the 360 degree views of Venice.</p>
<p>And <em>Wow</em>. Just <strong>WOW</strong>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084011.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11938" alt="The Campanile in Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy, Best View in Venice" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084011.jpg" width="559" height="679" /></a></p>
<p>The lagoon, the Grand Canal, the gondolas, the square below and the city stretched out before us until we could even see our cruise ship parked at the distant edge.</p>
<p>People, it was AMAZING! <span id="more-11530"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084111.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11943" alt="The Campanile in Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy, Best View in Venice" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084111.jpg" width="559" height="679" /></a></p>
<p>It had rained the night before and the square was filling up with water.  We watched from above as little worker bees set out the planks for people to walk through the square.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-083955.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11934" alt="The Campanile in Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy, Best View in Venice" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-083955.jpg" width="559" height="422" /></a></p>
<p>I also absolutely <em>loved</em> seeing San Marco&#8217;s domes (<em>St. Mark&#8217;s Cathedral</em>) from above.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084019.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11939" alt="The Campanile in Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy, Best View in Venice" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084019.jpg" width="559" height="421" /></a></p>
<p>There are five bells, and one still rings on the hour, but the days events, such as lunch or quitting time used to be marked by certain bell chimes.  I love the idea of a day marked by the ringing of ancient bells.  Not school buzzer bells, but great, deep musical sounds that call you to the next part of your day.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084002.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11936" alt="The Campanile in Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy, Best View in Venice" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084002.jpg" width="559" height="745" /></a></p>
<p>The tower is up Oh-So-High, so I was glad for these little bars over the windows, which would make it less scary to take a little one to the top, but they were plenty open enough for your camera, which is handy since you want a shot from every possibly angle.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084125.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11945" alt="The Campanile in Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy, Best View in Venice" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084125.jpg" width="559" height="745" /></a></p>
<p>After a while we made our way back down to the bottom and wandered on the planks in St. Mark&#8217;s Square (<em>Piazza San Marco</em>).  Everyone was going somewhere, but Mary Polly and I just stood around watching people make their way around and through the flooding.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-083947.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11935" alt="The Campanile in Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy, Best View in Venice" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-083947.jpg" width="559" height="745" /></a></p>
<p>An elevated line was gathering on the planks outside San Marco, and just as many people were just looking for a dry spot from which to take a photo.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084041.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11941" alt="The Campanile in Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy, Best View in Venice" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084041.jpg" width="559" height="775" /></a></p>
<p>The water seemed to keep the usual venders from braving the square, which made for a wonderfully empty space.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084101.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11942" alt="The Campanile in Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy, Best View in Venice" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084101.jpg" width="559" height="759" /></a></p>
<p>Eventually, you come to the end of the planks though, so we pulled off our shoes and waded through the water to our next stop.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084118.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11944" alt="The Campanile in Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy, Best View in Venice" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084118.jpg" width="559" height="745" /></a></p>
<p>On our second day in Venice, Mary Polly and I mostly wandered.</p>
<p>And wandered.</p>
<p>In and out of churches and gelato stands.</p>
<p>But our favorite part of the day was this fun morning at the top of <em>The Companile</em>, finished by wading through the square.  Such sweet memories!</p>
<p style="text-align: right;"><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084033.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11937" alt="The Campanile, Venice, Italy, Europe, Perfect Views, Travel, Eurocruisazy" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130610-084033.jpg" width="100" height="134" /></a></p>
<h5 style="text-align: right; padding-left: 390px;">In the fall of 2012, I took a Mediterranean Cruise with my daughter! It was the trip of a lifetime! We called it <a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/tag/eurocruisazy/">#Eurocruisazy</a>! Read about more of our adventures <a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/tag/eurocruisazy/">here</a>!</h5>

<p>If it seems like this <a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/tag/seven/">Seven Project</a> is lasting forever, well, that would be because&#8230;</p>
<p>it is.</p>
<p>Seriously, last month was Media, and I still haven&#8217;t caught up on all the things I missed.  Of course, it&#8217;s possible that if I am trying to cram all the information back into my life after the screen time break, I might have missed the point of the pause.</p>
<p>However, I can say this with confidence:</p>
<p><strong>All the things people say about fasting from media are true.</strong></p>
<p>You have more time for people and things that really matter.</p>
<p>Less distractions = more productivity.</p>
<p>No one emailed me wondering where I was or why my clever tweets/pretty pictures were absent from their feeds.</p>
<p>In other words, if I drop my phone in the pool tomorrow and go back to filling up notebooks instead of internet feeds, the only thing that would suffer is <a href="http://klout.com/#/alisonchino">my Klout score</a>.</p>
<p>Who cares, right?  Apparently, I do, because <a href="https://twitter.com/alisonchino">I&#8217;m back</a>.</p>
<p>Moving forward.</p>
<p><strong>Month 5 is Waste.</strong></p>
<p><span id="more-11837"></span></p>
<p>Waste involves being friendlier to the planet.  Trying to steward instead of consume.</p>
<p>Of all of the seven months, this one might be the one with which I am already the most on board. We already love the earth a LOT!</p>
<p>Even so, it was not that difficult to come up with seven new ways we can be wasting less at the Chino House.</p>
<p>So here they are, the seven habits beyond the recycling, composting and cloth napkin folding we already do:</p>
<p><strong>1. Walk to church/work. </strong> We live close.  We go there a lot.  We&#8217;re trying to walk it.  But it&#8217;s hot y&#8217;all!</p>
<p><strong>2. Walk to walk.</strong>  Almost every day, I drive to a lake that is about a mile from my house to go for a walk.  For this month, I am leaving my car parked and walking to walk.  (Mind blowing, eh?)  It&#8217;s not as pretty, I have to go through a major intersection and someone usually tries to pick me up (<em>Need a lift, Sweetie?</em>), but I&#8217;m getting extra exercise and using my car less.</p>
<p><strong>3. Pick up trash.</strong>  I live on the trashy side of the river.  You would not believe the junk people throw on the ground.  Seriously, I can fill a bag of trash on my walk to the lake.  So now I look like a bag lady!  Extra points for people thinking you are crazy!</p>
<p><strong>4. Recycle MORE!</strong>  That little, empty toilet paper roll that you want to toss in the bathroom trash?  Take it to the cans.</p>
<p><strong>5. Community Garden</strong>.  Work in somebody else&#8217;s garden because we don&#8217;t have one.  It&#8217;s just not happening in our backyard this year, but I can pull weeds in a friend&#8217;s yard!</p>
<p><strong>6. Zero paper products</strong>.  Take our own everywhere.  Coffee cups, water bottles, to go containers.</p>
<p><strong>7. Use a clothesline.</strong>  Hang dry our clothes and save on our dryer use.  Every summer I try to do this with varying levels of success.  Here we go again!</p>
<p>I&#8217;m enjoying this month already and it feels more fun to be doing NEW things instead of NOT doing Media.</p>
<p><strong>What are some of the little extra things you do to be a better steward of our earth&#8217;s precious resources?  I would love to know!</strong></p>
<p>PS <a href="http://www.jenhatmaker.com">Jen Hatmaker</a>, the author of <em>Seven: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess</em>, was on <a href="http://www.today.com/video/today/52155546">The Today Show</a> this week! Super exciting! </p>

<p>We&#8217;ve survived our first week of summer.  It&#8217;s always takes us a minute to get into the swing of summer, so during week one we usually have a few mishaps.</p>
<p>We get to the pool without our sunscreen.  We run out of bread because I forget how many sandwiches we eat.  I forget that I need a plan for the few hours I work outside of the home every week.</p>

<p><strong>Here are a few fun things that have happened in the last week!</strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.pallensmith.com/Digital-Publications/volume3/">P. Allen Smith&#8217;s Summer eMagazine</a></strong> came out, and <a title="Chinos to Moss Mountain Farm" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/05/20/chinos-to-moss-mountain-farm/">our family trip to Moss Mountain Farm</a> is featured on several pages!  So much fun!  I have three summer salad recipes in it, so you might want to <a href="http://www.pallensmith.com/Digital-Publications/volume3/">print it out</a> and make those sometime soon!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130603-185958.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full" alt="20130603-185958.jpg" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130603-185958.jpg" /></a></p>
<p>(Those are my hands mixing and pouring that dressing right there!)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130603-185931.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full" alt="20130603-185931.jpg" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130603-185931.jpg" /></a></p>
<p>Also, we were tickled pink to be <a href="http://oliveus.tv/make-your-own-olive-us-contest-honorable-mention-chino-house-family-cycling/">Honorably Mentioned</a> for our <a title="A Chino House Video: Family Cycling" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/04/29/chino-house-family-cycling/">Chino House Family Cycling Video</a> at <a href="http://oliveus.tv/">Olive Us</a>.</p>
<p>Did you see, I&#8217;m <strong>giving away <a title="Perfect BLT + A Father’s Day Giveaway From Petit Jean Meats" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/06/05/perfect-blt/">BACON</a></strong> this week?  You should definitely <a title="Perfect BLT + A Father’s Day Giveaway From Petit Jean Meats" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/06/05/perfect-blt/">enter to win</a> that!</p>
<p><strong>Here are a few things that are In The Pipeline at the Chino House:</strong></p>
<p><strong>Seven</strong></p>
<p>We finished up our <a title="Month 4: Radio Silence {Seven}" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/05/14/month-4-radio-silence-seven/">Month 4</a> of <a title="Seven" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2012/11/15/seven/">Seven</a>, which was a fast from Media.  And now we&#8217;re headed into Month 5, which is Waste.  I am excited about sharing the seven ways we are cutting our carbon footprint with you.  As part of <a title="Month 3: Seven Possessions" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/04/30/month-3-seven-possessions/">Month 3</a>, which was all about giving away our possessions, we have had two Giveaway Garage Sales to raise money for missions.  <a href="http://thedramatic.com/index.php/2013/06/02/giveaways-garage-sales-grace/">Sarabeth shared this week</a> about the one at her house.  She totally captured how these events make me feel: full to the brim with love and amazement at how things just work out when you are willing to show up and give of yourself!</p>
<p><strong>Travel</strong></p>
<p>Remember that <a title="Cruisazy" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/cruisazy/">European Cruise</a> I went on last year?  I&#8217;m sharing more from our two days in Venice next week!</p>
<p>Also, I finally visited <a href="http://www.crystalbridges.com">Crystal Bridges</a> and OH MY GOODNESS, I can&#8217;t wait to go through the pictures. It was amazing.</p>
<p><strong>Scotland</strong></p>
<p>I am still trying to gather my thoughts and feelings about our <strong>upcoming move to Scotland</strong>.  Almost every day brings a new bit of news or a new challenge to work through (Visas?! Yikes!)  However, we are already so amazed at how we have seen God&#8217;s faithfulness to us in the midst of so many unknowns.</p>
<p>I hope to write more about it soon, but my husband, <a href="http://taidochino.com">Taido</a>, has written at length about our journey to this decision, so you can read <a href="http://www.taidochino.com/2013/05/31/chinos-to-scotland/">his point of view</a> until I can get mine together. <img src='http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>I hope your summer is off to a great start and that you have the best weekend ever, soaking up sunshine and loving with all your heart.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Want to know what the key is to a perfect BLT in my opinion?</p>
<p>There are lots of factors that can add to this pretty much perfect combination of sandwich ingredients.  Good bread, a good grainy mustard, super fresh tomatoes or the addition of avocado all make this sandwich yummy.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130605-080158.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11884" alt="Perfect BLT, Peppered Bacon, Petit Jean Meats, Summer Eats, Bacon Recipes" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130605-080158.jpg" width="614" height="608" /></a></p>
<p>But the thing that makes a BLT <em>extra special</em> is this:</p>
<p><strong>Peppered bacon.</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130605-080146.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11883" alt="Perfect BLT, Peppered Bacon, Petit Jean Meats, Summer Eats, Bacon Recipes" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130605-080146.jpg" width="589" height="614" /></a></p>
<p>Seriously, this <a href="http://www.petitjeanmeats.com/Peppered-Bacon/productinfo/45/">extra thick peppered bacon from Petit Jean Meats</a> is one of the best ways I know to make a BLT pop with flavor.  It&#8217;s also pretty amazing all by itself!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130605-080106.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11881" alt="Perfect BLT, Peppered Bacon, Petit Jean Meats, Summer Eats, Bacon Recipes" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130605-080106.jpg" width="614" height="614" /></a></p>
<p>I am super excited to be giving away a <a href="http://www.petitjeanmeats.com/Bacon-Sampler/productinfo/211/">Petit Jean Bacon Sampler</a> just in time for Father&#8217;s Day!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130605-080057.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11880" alt="Perfect BLT, Peppered Bacon, Petit Jean Meats, Summer Eats, Bacon Recipes" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130605-080057.jpg" width="596" height="614" /></a></p>
<p>This sampler has all three different kinds of <a href="http://www.petitjeanmeats.com/Bacon/products/6/">Petit Jean Bacon</a> and it comes straight to your doorstep in a cooler! I kind of think it&#8217;s a perfect dad gift, because&#8230;well, they can eat it.</p>
<p>If your dad is like mine, he already has closets full of junk. I mean, I guess I could get him some new socks, since his are kind of shabby. But let&#8217;s be honest, he would much rather have bacon.</p>
<p>To enter to win the <a href="http://www.petitjeanmeats.com/Bacon-Sampler/productinfo/211/">Petit Jean Meats Bacon Sampler</a>, just leave a comment on this post.  Tell me your favorite way to eat bacon.  Or your favorite thing to eat with your dad?  Or your favorite way to eat bacon WITH your dad?</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the recipe for BLTs, even though you don&#8217;t really need a recipe!</p>
<p><strong>Perfect BLTs for Six</strong></p>
<p>A loaf of your favorite bread</p>
<p>2 avocodos</p>
<p>2 large tomatoes</p>
<p>1 package <a href="http://www.petitjeanmeats.com/Peppered-Bacon/productinfo/45/">extra thick peppered bacon from Petit Jean Meats</a></p>
<p>whole grain mustard and mayo (optional)</p>
<p>a head of green leaf lettuce</p>
<p>Fry the bacon. Slice the tomatoes and avocados.  Wash and tear the lettuce into large pieces.  Set everything on the table and call everyone to the table to make their Perfect BLTs!</p>

<p>Last week, I went to Moore, Oklahoma and saw with my own eyes the path of destruction left by recent tornadoes. It was like nothing I have ever seen before in person.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162645.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11790" alt="Serve Moore, Tornado Relief, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Tornado, Oklahoma" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162645.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162625.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11794" alt="Serve Moore, Tornado Relief, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Tornado, Oklahoma" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162625.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>Since being there, even more tornadoes have come through the area.</p>
<p>Our work day was organized by a group from Starbucks, and since my brother is a supervisor for some stores in the area, he was going and he let us tag along.</p>
<p>Basically we put on gloves and picked up debris, moving it to piles where it could later be collected by the city.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162657.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11791" alt="Serve Moore, Tornado Relief, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Tornado, Oklahoma" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162657.jpg" width="599" height="798" /></a></p>
<p><span id="more-11780"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162611.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11787" alt="Serve Moore, Tornado Relief, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Tornado, Oklahoma" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162611.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162617.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11793" alt="Serve Moore, Tornado Relief, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Tornado, Oklahoma" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162617.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>We road on Moore school buses to the site.  Then we were assigned to teams and given addresses of lots where we had permission from owners to clean up and sort through their rubble.</p>
<p>Honestly, it didn&#8217;t feel like I did that much, but the combined effort of 300 folks was like ants making a hill.  All of a sudden there were big piles ready for pick up.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162631.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11788" alt="Serve Moore, Tornado Relief, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Tornado, Oklahoma" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162631.jpg" width="614" height="432" /></a></p>
<p>Baskets of things that might be treasures were set aside for owners to look through later.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162557.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11785" alt="Serve Moore, Tornado Relief, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Tornado, Oklahoma" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162557.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>The man who gave us our instructions represented <a href="http://servemoore.com/">ServeMoore.com</a>, a website that didn&#8217;t exist until a couple of weeks ago.  He made me cry by telling us how thankful he was for our help.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162550.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11784" alt="Serve Moore, Tornado Relief, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Tornado, Oklahoma" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162550.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>He said that the best way he knew to thank us was to thank God for us, and then he prayed over the sea of green t-shirts.</p>
<p>This man, who lives in an area that was decimated in minutes by crazy tunnels of wind, prayed for <em>us</em>, a group of 300 people who drove from our safely standing homes to see his town and work for a few hours.</p>
<p>It was one of those reversal moments in life that gives you a big lump in your throat for about a week.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162637.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11789" alt="Serve Moore, Tornado Relief, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Tornado, Oklahoma" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162637.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>The organization, <a href="http://servemoore.com/">ServeMoore.com</a>, has the clean up effort organized <em>really</em> well.</p>
<p>In fact, if you are driving I-40 this summer with your family, your friends or a church group, you can hop on their website and find an address where you can show up and help for a day!</p>
<p>(Peter is back there with <a href="http://www.whitneyloibner.com">Whitney</a> and the boys this week!)</p>
<p>You can also find out what items are most needed if you want to donate.  One of the groups that drove in brought homemade baked goods for the shelters that were MUCH appreciated!  I thought that was SUCH a great idea.  They had the treats all tied up in bags with sweet notes on them.  LOVE!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162527.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11781" alt="Serve Moore, Tornado Relief, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Tornado, Oklahoma" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162527.jpg" width="614" height="441" /></a></p>
<p>In addition to being blown away by how a group of folks and churches in the area have organized so quickly to create <a href="http://servemoore.com/">ServeMoore.com</a>, I was also really amazed by Starbucks.  Starbucks employees from several states rose up so quickly to participate that they had to ask some regions to wait and participate in later service dates, which are already being organized.  Also, Starbucks will donate $10 for every hour we worked last week to tornado relief.  Even though Mary Polly, Cole and I don&#8217;t work for Starbucks, our hours were counted too, since we came and worked alongside them.  That is amazing to me!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162707.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-11792" alt="Serve Moore, Tornado Relief, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Tornado, Oklahoma" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130530-162707.jpg" width="749" height="1024" /></a></p>
<p>Plus, they found a company that printed us these precious shirts for free!  It&#8217;s my new favorite shirt!  I might even wear it for <a title="Month 2: Clothes + Pure Charity" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/03/01/seven-month-2/">a whole month</a>.</p>
<p>Also, the Starbucks stores in the area served us coffee (of course!), pastries and snacks before we got to work.  And Chik-Fil-A brought us lunch!  What?  Again, I couldn&#8217;t believe how much love the City of Moore (and Oklahoma City) poured out on us just for showing up.  If you have a chance to go and help this summer, I highly recommend jumping on it!</p>
<p>People coming together to help other people is one of the most beautiful things in the whole world!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Yummiest little bite of party food ever?  <strong>Bacon Wrapped Dates With Goat Cheese!</strong></p>
<p>Sweet + Salty + Cheese = Goodness.</p>
<p><em>Such</em> a happy combination of flavors, I promise.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130602-204338.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11818" alt="Bacon Wrapped Dates With Goat Cheese, Petit Jean Meats, Bacon Recipes, Appetizers" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20130602-204338.jpg" width="614" height="614" /></a></p>
<p>Bacon is relatively hard to beat as a crowd pleaser, so naturally, these were a big hit at my house. My sister makes platters and platters of them for parties <a title="Blackberry Market" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/04/24/blackberry-market/">at her restaurant</a>.  It took me a little while to prep them, but that part could be done ahead of time for sure.</p>
<p>And speaking of bacon, I am <a title="Perfect BLT + A Father’s Day Giveaway From Petit Jean Meats" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/06/05/perfect-blt/">giving away</a> a<a href="http://www.petitjeanmeats.com/Bacon-Sampler/productinfo/211/"> Petit Jean Bacon Sampler</a> this week!</p>
<p>Just in time for Father&#8217;s Day!</p>
<p><strong>Bacon Wrapped Dates With Goat Cheese</strong></p>
<p>1 pound (16 slices) <a href="http://www.petitjeanmeats.com/Hickory-Smoked-Bacon/productinfo/47/">Petit Jean bacon</a></p>
<p>1/2 cup goat cheese</p>
<p>32 dates</p>
<p>toothpicks</p>
<p>Cut bacon slices in half.  Fill dates with goat cheese.  Wrap a half slice of bacon around each date and secure with a toothpick.  Repeat with all the dates.</p>
<p>Bake on a parchment lined cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes.</p>
<p>Cool slightly before serving.</p>
<p><em>Enjoy!</em></p>

<p><strong>Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith and the Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board</strong></p>
<p><img class="size-full wp-image-11591 aligncenter" alt="#bean2blog, 2013" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/bean2blog-widget.jpg" width="191" height="214" /></p>
<p>Because I am a native Arkansan, one of the details I appreciate most about garden and lifestyle guru, <a href="http://www.pallensmith.com/">P. Allen Smith</a> is his love for our home state of Arkansas.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/tag/bean-2-blog/">Bean2Blog</a> is all about support for Arkansas, which is why Allen continues to host it.  He designed and built his <a href="http://www.pallensmith.com/garden-home-retreat/">Garden Home</a> and its surrounding Garden Rooms at Moss Mountain Farm to be a teaching tool for people of all ages, and it has certainly succeeded in fulfilling this purpose.  In addition to gardening, home and interior design, Moss Mountain Farm is a place to learn about raising poultry, raising vegetables, living an ecologically sustainable life, farming in Arkansas and cooking healthy vegetables with the seasons.</p>
<div id="attachment_11729" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 502px"><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMG_0674.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-11729" title="Dogtown girls with P Allen Smith" alt="Bean2Blog, P Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMG_0674.jpg" width="492" height="276" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">photo by Lyndi Fultz</p></div>
<p>All of these disciplines are steeped in history and tradition, and new projects are constantly emerging.</p>
<div id="attachment_11726" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 520px"><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMG_0441.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-11726 " title="Walking to the Rose Garden" alt="Bean2Blog, P Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMG_0441.jpg" width="510" height="286" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">photo by Lyndi Fultz</p></div>
<p>The Rose Garden is the latest garden installment, and it is still evolving as Allen continues to collect antique rose varieties that will be in bloom during different months of the year so that the garden shines with color for as much of the growing season as possible.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-222909.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11746" alt="Bean2Blog, Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-222909.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p><span id="more-11581"></span></p>
<p>I mentioned <a title="Chinos to Moss Mountain Farm" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/05/20/chinos-to-moss-mountain-farm/">last week</a> that there is so much going on at Moss Mountain Farm at once that it can be dizzying at times.  Even while <a title="Gina graciously made a list here!" href="http://www.isogina.blogspot.com/2013/05/bean2blog-pt3-bean-bloggers.html">a group of us bloggers</a> were there for Bean2Blog, Southern Living was also on the property shooting images of the gardens.</p>
<p>Because his days are so full and events seem to be happening simultaneously, Allen&#8217;s willingness to give us (and Arkansas farmers) his undivided attention for the day at Bean2Blog was all the more endearing to me.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-222855.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11744" alt="Bean2Blog, Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-222855.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>Part history teacher and master storyteller, as well as gracious host, Allen led us first through the gardens, which are arranged symmetrically around the Garden Home.  And all the design leads back to the focal point, which is the 350 year old oak tree in front of the house.</p>
<div id="attachment_11727" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 562px"><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMG_0489.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-11727 " title="Listening to the Garden Tour" alt="Bean2Blog, P Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMG_0489.jpg" width="552" height="309" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">photo by Lyndi Fultz</p></div>
<p><strong>Garden Tour</strong></p>
<p>We wandered between terraced beds full of all manner of flower and fauna, through trained wisteria trees that were saved from an area being plowed for a strip mall, around a one hundred year old fig tree that commands the center of a garden room and along a pond with gorgeous swans named Wilma and Fred.</p>
<p>Then on we went to the Rose Garden, which sort of beckons to you from below.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-222917.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11747" alt="Bean2Blog, Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-222917.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>Next was the Vegetable Garden where we planted edamame seeds and enjoyed seeing all the veggies, some ready for harvest (Swiss Chard and leafy green lettuces) and some just getting started (tomatoes and squash),  as well as all different kinds of berry bushes, including 22 varieties of blueberry.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-222931.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11749" alt="Bean2Blog, Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-222931.jpg" width="461" height="614" /></a></p>
<p>Someone asked what kind of blueberries were in the garden and Allen answered that almost any word or phrase you can think of that has <em>blue</em> in it is probably a blueberry variety.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-222924.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11748" alt="Bean2Blog, Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-222924.jpg" width="614" height="472" /></a></p>
<p><strong> Poultryville</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-224352.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11753" alt="Bean2Blog, Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-224352.jpg" width="461" height="614" /></a></p>
<p>Past a field that is home to a horse, a donkey, some sheep and two excited Anatolian shepherds named <a title="they have their own show!" href="http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL487C5E2CB13EAF71">Smudge and Squeak</a>, is what Allen calls Poultryville. This is home to the many heritage breeds of poultry he is working to preserve.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-224423.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11755" alt="Bean2Blog, Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour, Poultryville" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-224423.jpg" width="461" height="614" /></a></p>
<p>They all have distinguished names, such as these Silver Laced Wine Dots, and at first glance, you can tell that these chickens are special.  Last time we were here, Cole told me how much he loved that Mr. Smith kept his chickens, ducks and turkeys so well organized.  Neatly lined rows of pens house these pretty birds, and we got to wander in and around them while Allen told us all about this part of the farm.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-224408.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11754" alt="Bean2Blog, Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-224408.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Garden Home</strong></p>
<p>It began to rain on us in Poultryville, so we moved next to the house.  It did not matter that I had been on the <a title="Soaking it all in at Moss Mountain Farm" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2012/05/24/moss-mountain-farm/">Home Tour before</a>, or even that I had been <a title="Chinos to Moss Mountain Farm" href="http://www.alisonchino.com/2013/05/20/chinos-to-moss-mountain-farm/">cooking in the kitchen</a> the week before, I still sat in awe as Allen shared with us about the house.</p>
<div id="attachment_11728" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 562px"><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMG_0542.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-11728 " title="Enchanted" alt="Bean2Blog, P Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMG_0542.jpg" width="552" height="309" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">photo by Lyndi Fultz</p></div>
<p>Each well-thought detail amazed me. (<a href="http://nwafoodie.com/">Lyndi</a> caught me mid-gawk.)  I am a cook, not a decorator, so I appreciate those who can create spaces in their minds and then execute their designs.  I can do this with food but not with furniture.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-224450.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11757" alt="Bean2Blog, Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-224450.jpg" width="614" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>Even with the divine kitchen, I would have to say that the porches of the Garden Home are my favorite spaces.  The front porch, the back porch and the sleeping porch all have soothing color schemes and comfy spots that call out to you to just come and rest for a while.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-224503.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11758" alt="Bean2Blog, Bean2Blog 2013 with P. Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-224503.jpg" width="461" height="614" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Q &amp; A with P. Allen Smith</strong></p>
<p>After the tour, before and during our wonderful lunch in the barn was the portion of Bean2Blog dedicated to hearing from our farmers.  This part of the day needs its own attention, so more on that to come!</p>
<p>But after all that, we got to hear from Allen one last time during a Q &amp; A session.</p>
<p>We asked him all our questions and he patiently answered each one.  The best questions were the ones he answered with a story.</p>
<p>He would start a story and I would settle into my chair like a spellbound toddler at a library story hour.  Even if I had heard it before, I was all in.  Our favorite stories are the ones we love to tell and to hear over and over again.</p>
<p>For Allen, these are the stories of a childhood farm, of finding and chasing his first chicken into a women&#8217;s clothing store, of discovering a piece of antique furniture in New Orleans and of bidding on a painting that turned out to be much bigger than he had anticipated.</p>
<div id="attachment_11730" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 506px"><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMG_0675.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-11730 " title="NWA girls + Dogtown girls" alt="Bean2Blog, P Allen Smith, Moss Mountain Farm, Arkansas Soybean Promotional Board, Garden Home Tour" src="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMG_0675.jpg" width="496" height="279" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">photo by Lyndi Fultz</p></div>
<p>A little rain soaked and full of yummy treats made with soy, we were all a bit sad when the day was over.  I could have listened to stories until bedtime, but we crawled back into our cars and rode home all aglow with our peek over the fence of life at Moss Mountain Farm.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alisonchino.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/20130528-224339.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-11752" alt="Bean2Blog, Bean2Blog 2013 with P.
