I finished Bill Bryson’s book about the UK this week, Notes from a Small Island. Learned + Laughed a LOT. Then the next day I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy and cried a lot. (Up and Down friends, Up. And. Down.)

I read a lot anyway but winter is the best. Loved “the road” book and movie. I always read the book first though 🙂

I too, loved “The Road.” Quite a page turner… Lots of reading in Vermont this winter – what else, really, can we do? Been too cold to walk much and am jealous of those out rambling… But spring will come. Yes, it will!

I’ve been re-reading favorites this Winter. I Capture the Castle was the last one I finished.
I am reading Roadside Picnic at the moment. It is a bit dark, which may not mix well with Winter for me, but I can’t imagine reading it in another season.
This one looks pretty cool and I might read it next. Set in the Hebridean isles.

I completely agree that Winter is for reading. The only thing that compares to snuggling up with a good book by a fire in Winter is reading a book in warm sunshine accompanied by some iced tea and giggling children playing around you. Not too far to go now!

I loved your and Taido’s letters to each other. Your love for one another comes shining through in those words.
As for books, I just finished one for our reading group: “Still Alice” by Lisa Genova, a fictional account of a woman who has just turned 50 and is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. She’s a Harvard professor of cognitive psychology specializing in linguistics who travels the world lecturing on her topic of expertise. So it’s particularly ironic and excruciating to watch the disease tighten its stranglehold on Alice and her family. (Also, Alice is my age – I turned 51 a couple of months ago.)
What I find compelling is that this is written from Alice’s perspective. You observe the world through her eyes – the world as she knows it, slipping away bit by bit.
Well, now I’m stealing from myself – I haven’t written the review yet – so I’ll stop here.

“Notes from a Small Island” is one of my favourite Bill Bryson books too, though it’s getting a bit long in the tooth now (no British Rail anymore for example). You might like his more recent book about England, called “At Home: A short history of private life”. He uses each of the rooms in his Norfolk home (a mid-19th century vicarage) ” to consider how the ordinary things in life came to be.” For more, see http://www.billbryson.co.uk/index.php/at-home-illustrated-edition/#uk
